Let’s Talk Music: A Music Video Commentary Series

Introduction

Let’s Talk Music with Emma Frisbie is a 3-part music video commentary series that explores the three different types of music videos – Performance, Narrative, and Experimental. Each episode features a music video example for each type that’s analyzed and examined for its identifying features.

The goal of this series is to educate viewers on different types of music videos while also maintaining a chatty and relaxed feel. As a music and film lover, this series provided a way for me to combine my skills as a creator and create a fun and enjoyable series.

Series Objectives

  • Shed light and show that music videos are more than just a supplemental or promotional aid to a song or album, but an essential part of the music industry.

Proposal and Series Development

The objectives of this series are to shed light and show that music videos are more than just a supplemental or promotional aid to a song or album. I’ve always seen them as “mini” short films. I also wanted to help viewers understand how universal music is. It’s a way for people to connect and relate to each other without a barrier and acts as a universal language. Music videos are the visual translation between the artist and their audience.

Project Plan

In an effort to stay organized, on track, and avoid procrastination, I used Trello to outline my steps for creating the series. Breaking down my series into “bite-sized” pieces helped me to better comprehend and manage the work at hand.

Five components

I split my project plan into five main sections:

  • Research

  • Script Writing

  • Production

  • Post-Production

  • Assets

Research

Throughout the creation and production of this series, I have worked on building a comprehensive and in-depth Annotated Bibliography to support my series. Included are 30 sources from five different mediums including videos, magazines, articles, journals, and blogs. These sources gave me the framework and support for my ideas and inspirations.

Production Journals

Each week, I worked on and completed my artifacts and deliverables. I used production journals to keep track of the time I spent on each task every week. This proved to be a great way to reflect on my hard work during the process while also ensuring that I meet weekly deliverables.

Series Intro and Outro

For the series intro and outro, I created a simple motion graphic using Adobe After Effects.
